In addition to his position in the CRC, Dr. Mei, is joining the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Marine Sciences as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Mei’s work focuses on understanding how interactions between atmosphere, ocean and climate dynamics and variability, affect tropical cyclone frequency, intensity and tracks.

Coastal Resilience Center Principal Investigator, Dr. Rick Luettich, led the search committee that selected Dr. Mei.

“The committee was extremely impressed with Dr. Mei’s scholarship and felt as though he would be a tremendous addition to climate research and teaching at UNC,” Luettich said. “His focus on tropical cyclones is a great fit with CRC’s current research to improve predictions of the impacts of these storms on coastal areas”.

Previously, Dr. Mei was a postdoctoral scholar with the Division of Climate, Atmospheric Sciences, and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Mei received a B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from Nanjing University in China in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Earth System Science from the University of California, Irvine in 2012.
