Dr. Gary LaFreeDr. Gary LaFree is Director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) and a Distinguished Scholar and professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. He is currently a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology (ASC) and has served as President of the ASC and of the ASC’s Division on International Criminology. His research is on the causes and consequences of violent crime and terrorism. His most recent book (with Laura Dugan and Erin Miller) is called Putting Terrorism in Context and was published in 2015 by Routledge. Much of LaFree’s research is related to understanding criminal violence, and he is the senior member of the team that created and now maintains the Global Terrorism Database.
